The university has a nice modern campus with great staff covering lots of different expertise. For me, the university has done wel during covid offering support and helping students re emerge out the other side of covid. It has allowed me to find my passion through experimentation and course work.

Business Studies / Management, Year 2

(5)·By Lilli L·Business· Jul 2021
Good, the Uni organises a bunch of different things for freshers and you get to know many people from all over the world. There's lots of different private student accommodations around town and RGU has their own accommodation as well. The Uni is very new with great study facilities and a lovely library. The course has a great mixture of academic and practical knowledge which is amazing for applying to jobs The city is great for students, especially because there's another Uni around along with several colleges

Accounting and Finance, Year 2

(5)·By Emily·Accounting· Oct 2018
I'm currently a 2nd year student at RGU and study accounting and finance. I find my course extremely good and have secured my Year 3 placement which is offered on the course. There are also a number of societies and clubs available to join, I've tried the mountaineering club so far in my first semester of Year 2 which I found great! There are also many opportunities to study abroad etc which is a great opportunity.
My course itself has been a challenge but there is always support available and not only the university but the student union is always on hand! The atmosphere is also much different from other universities and is very open plan and good for coming together to study.

Other, Year 2

(4.8)·By Lucy W·Other· Oct 2018
My university experience last year was great although I am shy! I did struggle but eventually did settle in to a group of friends on my course. Unfortunately my flatmates and I didn't really gel very well but I wish them the best for the future! This year I've decided to be more outgoing and have joined the RGU dance team! Bit out of my comfort zone but I've met a few new friends there! My flatmates are great this year, we all really get on! Here's to a better year at uni and to hip hop dancing my way through exams in January!

Building, Year 4 Plus

(4.8)·By Connor H·Building / Construction· Oct 2018
My experience in Uni has been fantastic. I've made loads of new friends in which I can say I will be friends with for life. I have expanded my knowledge in my course, building surveying. I also feel so much more confident in myself and I am looking forward to seeing where the knowledge I have learned will take me in life.

Business and Management Studies, Year 3

(4.8)·By Holly D·Management· Oct 2018
I did a two plus two with aberdeen college and to start with there was very little support in the way of moving up to Year 3 at university.
Luckily RGU is a very open and helpful university that has meant I've made lots of new friends from many other countries and lecturers are usually more than happy to help when you need it.

Robert Gordon University: A Practical, Career-Focused Experience with Real-World Relevance

(4.7)·By Ava S·Business· Jun 2026
As a first-year International Business student at Robert Gordon University, my experience so far has been largely positive, especially in terms of how practical and career-focused the course is. One of the biggest strengths of the course is how applied it is. Rather than just focusing on theory, many of the modules link directly to real-world business situations. For example, in modules like Business Perspectives and People Management, we’ve worked on tasks such as interview planning, analysing companies, and understanding how businesses actually operate. This makes the content feel relevant and useful, especially for someone like me who wants to go into a business-related career.

The workload can feel quite fast-paced at times, particularly when multiple deadlines come up close together. However, this does prepare you for the reality of working in business, where time management is important. Assessments are mostly coursework-based rather than exams, which I prefer, as it allows you to develop skills like report writing, research, and critical thinking.

The university itself has a strong focus on employability. There is a clear emphasis on building skills that employers are looking for, and opportunities such as placements are heavily encouraged, even from early on in the course. This is a big advantage compared to more theory-heavy degrees.

Lecturers are generally supportive and approachable, although like any university, the experience can vary depending on the module. When you engage and ask for help, they are usually willing to guide you and provide feedback.

If I had to mention a downside, it would be that some parts of the course can feel quite structured or guided, especially in first year. While this is helpful for building a foundation, it can sometimes feel less independent compared to what you might expect from university. However, this will likely improve in later years.

Overall, I would recommend Robert Gordon University to students who are looking for a practical, career-focused degree rather than a purely academic one. It’s a good choice if you want to build real-world business skills alongside your studies and feel prepared for employment after graduating.
