Training in statistics will provide opportunities to work in manufacturing, environmental science, medical research and government. You could work on clinical trials or analyse quality control processes. You’ll graduate with a technical background in mathematics, and the statistical and communication skills needed for a career as a statistician.<br/><br/>Youll study core mathematical topics such as algebra and calculus. You’ll learn both practical and theoretical statistics, including probability theory to understand random events, and modern computing techniques to analyse large amounts of data.<br/><br/>As part of this course you’ll:<br/><br/><br/>• Understand, analyse and communicate statistical results<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Learn how to model random events and processes<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Apply statistical analysis to real-world data<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Use our student centre, a dedicated learning and social space, exclusively for maths students<br/><br/><br/><br/>• Use mathematical and computational packages such as Python and the statistics package R<br/><br/><br/><br/>You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops by leading researchers. Their fields of expertise include survey methods, healthcare modelling and designing experiments.<br/><br/>Southampton mathematics graduates are in great demand. Many employers look for graduates with strong problem-solving skills who can develop sound analytical arguments. Depending on your degree specialism, a wide range of career destinations are available including mathematician, statistician, actuary and financial analyst. We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4
