Technology powers almost every organisation, but successful digital solutions require more than technical expertise alone. They need people who understand both how technology works and how businesses use it to solve problems, improve services and achieve their goals.
Computing and IT explores the relationship between technology and business, helping you develop the skills to design, build and apply digital solutions in real commercial environments. You'll learn how organisations use technology and AI to overcome challenges, improve efficiency and support innovation, while gaining the technical and professional skills needed to contribute to those solutions.
Practical learning is at the heart of the course. You'll gain experience with industry-relevant technologies and development tools, including SQL, PHP and Java and modern AI tools to support real business tasks such as automation, data-driven decision making and improving user experiences, while building the problem-solving skills needed to apply them effectively. Rather than focusing solely on programming, you'll learn how to connect technical decisions with business objectives and user needs.
A key strength of the course is its focus on employability and professional practice. You'll explore how businesses use technology strategically and responsibly, develop analytical and decision-making skills, and gain experience tackling realistic industry challenges. For students looking to enhance their professional experience further, an optional industry placement is available.
Alongside technical development, you'll build valuable transferable skills in communication, project work, teamwork and business awareness. You'll also be encouraged to think creatively and entrepreneurially about how technology can create opportunities and solve real-world problems.
By graduation, you'll have a combination of computing knowledge, commercial awareness and practical experience that can help prepare you for opportunities in areas such as data analysis, applied AI, web development, databases, programming, systems analysis, IT management and related technology-focused careers.
