Biomedical Science sits at the heart of modern healthcare. From identifying diseases and analysing patient samples to helping develop new treatments and medical breakthroughs, biomedical scientists play a vital role in improving health outcomes and advancing our understanding of human biology.
This course is designed to help you understand how science underpins the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease while developing the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. You'll explore the biological processes that affect human health and investigate how scientific discoveries are translated into real-world healthcare solutions.
As your studies progress, you'll develop an understanding of the important role Biomedical Science plays within healthcare systems, supporting clinicians, healthcare professionals and researchers in diagnosing disease, monitoring health conditions and developing future treatments. You'll gain insight into the wider impact biomedical science has across healthcare, research, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors.
A major strength of the course is its professional recognition. The programme is accredited by both the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and the Royal Society of Biology. These accreditations recognise the quality of the course, the scientific knowledge it develops and its relevance to professional practice and employer needs. Accreditation by the IBMS also supports the academic requirements associated with progression towards registration as a biomedical scientist.
Alongside developing scientific understanding, you'll build analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills that are highly valued across a range of scientific and healthcare settings. You'll learn how Biomedical Science contributes to evidence-based healthcare and how scientific research can help improve patient care and outcomes.
By graduation, you'll have developed a strong foundation in biomedical science and a deeper understanding of the relationship between science and healthcare. The course can support progression into biomedical science and related scientific careers, postgraduate study, or graduate-entry routes into professions such as medicine, dentistry and the Physician Associate (PA) profession.
