Biology helps us understand the world around us, from the smallest cellular processes to the complex relationships between organisms and their environments. If you're curious about how living systems function and want to explore the science behind life on Earth, this course offers the opportunity to study biology in its broadest sense.
Biological Science BSc (Hons) allows you to investigate a diverse range of biological, environmental and life sciences, developing a detailed understanding of the connections between organisms, ecosystems and human activity. You'll explore the science that underpins life while gaining insight into the challenges and opportunities facing the natural world.
The course begins with a strong foundation across key biological disciplines, including biochemistry, cell biology, ecology, evolution and microbiology. As you progress, you'll have the flexibility to tailor your degree by selecting topics from biology, biomedical science, ecology and environmental science. This allows you to shape your learning around your individual interests.
You'll develop valuable laboratory and fieldwork skills through hands-on scientific investigation, supported by modern bioscience facilities and opportunities for field-based learning. Visits and fieldwork activities further enhance your understanding of biological systems in real-world settings.
A particular strength of the programme is its focus on independent scientific enquiry. In your final year, you'll undertake a substantial research project and have the opportunity to present your dissertation findings at the University's annual research conference, helping you develop confidence in communicating scientific ideas and evidence.
The programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, recognising the quality of its scientific content and the skills it develops. Accreditation provides assurance that the course supports the development of both subject-specific knowledge and valuable transferable skills sought by employers.
By graduation, you'll have developed strong scientific, analytical and practical skills, alongside a broad understanding of biological systems and environmental interactions that can support opportunities across science, research, conservation, environmental management and related fields.
