This foundation year option provides an entry route for students from a wide range of backgrounds who may not have the traditional entry qualifications to join the first year of a Nursing or Midwifery degree. The foundation year will help you develop both personally and professionally, providing you with the tools to begin your journey towards becoming a competent, sensitive professional who can perform effectively in a variety of settings and work in collaboration with other professionals. You will develop practical, technical and communication skills, and apply knowledge to real-life problems.

You will gain awareness about the attitudes and behaviours required by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to succeed on a professional programme, and in your future career. You will also learn about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and how these link to healthcare.

After successfully completing your foundation year, you will join the BSc Mental Health Nursing which leads to registration as a mental health nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Your studies will include core elements for all fields of nursing and modules specific to mental health. Youll learn first-hand from mental health service users and carers, through our strong partnerships with service user and carer-led organisations including the Recovery College, the Sutton Carers Centre and the South West London Recovery College.
